Stronger People - Stronger Business

What are the top three people challenges in Singapore?
  • Fast to quit: 60%
  • Burnt out: 67%
  • Disengaged: 80%

This week I attended an event by the Association for SME and the speakers and panel were very insightful. The title: Stronger People - Stronger Business. Which leads directly into Organisational Health.

The first excellent comment from the speaker representing NTU, was the notion that we should stop talking about resources, and rather talk about Human Capital. This means we need to invest in this asset, let it grow and this will give us excellent return.

Now, how can we address the people challenges mentioned above? This is where Organisational Health comes in. As a business we need to be smart & healthy. A healthy organisation will nurture stronger people; which will then unleash their potential (smartness) to build stronger businesses. And here a first important notion: a strong business looks at long-term, high quality results.

What are the key components that will cultivate stronger people?
  • Cohesion - this is a work environment where people work together towards the common objective to make the company successful; this starts with trust; and this starts at the top of the organisation.
  • Clarity on Direction - this common objective needs to be clear; and it needs to be meaningful and purposeful; and each employee needs to see their own ambition represented in the company objectives.
  • Experimentation - the key theme here is to try things out - trial & learning. When we talk and argue, we are making decisions on opinions and neglect data; with experiments we can create this data; and build a learning organisation
  • Delegation - this might be the last piece to intrinsic motivation and hence engaging the workforce; providing autonomy allows people to unfold their potential; and this means delegation of control and allowing people at the front to make decisions; and this is possible with clarity and experimentation

Great to see these topics addressed by the small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore; developing and strengthening the right leadership behaviour which leads to better people, better businesses, and better society.
